The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, at a time when Japanese students, were protesting against the established order. Told by 37-year-old Toru Watanabe, who has just arrived in Hamburg, Germany. He hears an orchestral cover of the Beatles’ song “Norwegian Wood,” which takes him back into the Tokyo of the 1960s, when so much happened that touched his life.
